Dosha Balancing Breakfast Ideas

Published on: February 20, 2024

Just because something is good for you doesn’t mean it’s good for you

If you are experiencing a dosha imbalance you may be confused about how to start your day….here are some quick tips:

Vata Imbalance

A vata imbalance can be the most challenging to identify because vata tends to push the other doshas when there is an imbalance. If you aren’t sure what the root of your imbalance- start with vata.

Excess vata might look like:

  • Constipation
  • Bloating
  • Missed periods
  • Feeling disconnected or out of sorts
  • Feeling cold and overly dry

Vata is the dosha of air and space so to pacify a vata imbalance start your day with a grounding baked oatmeal, or steel cut oats with nuts and ghee. This is also a good opportunity for yoga, strength training, and some meditation.

Pitta Imbalance

Pitta drives agni, aka digestion, and is ruled by the fire and water elements. If you’re feeling like everything is coming at you hot and fast it’s time to cool down- yes, even in late winter.

Excess pitta may look like:

  • Insatiable hunger
  • GERD or heart burn
  • Diarrhea
  • heavy , crampy periods,
  • Acne or skin flair up

Cool things down by skipping the HIIT workout and try some restorative yoga. After yoga class fuel up with an egg/ veggie scramble. You might want to trade out the coffee for something less GI stimulating like cucumber water or a lavender tea.

Kapha Imbalance

Kapha imbalance has always been a tough one for me to notice. By nature kapha is slow and heavy, so it may creep up on you before you realize you are stuck in a cycle of melancholy. Kapha rules spring and just like spring is ruled by water and earth- mud, so much mud!

Kapha imbalance may present as:

  • Bloating
  • Sluggish slow digestion
  • Feeling heavy
  • Low energy
  • PMS, long unrelenting periods
  • Sadness for no apparent reason

Snap out of the blues with a refreshing Green Juice or seasonal kitchari cleanse. A good sweat inducing workout is a good idea too!
